Alitalia – Air Malta talks break down

The deal is off between Air Malta and Alitalia, which would have led to Alitalia owning 49% in Malta’s national carrier.

According to a joint-statement, both airlines decided to terminate talks late Friday, adding “the two airlines agreed that the current changing landscape in the airline industry was not ideal for such a transaction and that both airlines would concentrate on the current challenges without entering into a partnership”.

Newspaper reports claim Malta’s government were expecting to initiate discussions with other airlines which had expressed interest.

Air Malta and Alitalia will continue to collaborate closely commercially through a recently launched  extensive code-sharing program.
