The Big Cheese with Langham’s Lachlan Harris!

Lachlan Harris, Director of Sales & Marketing, The Langham Sydney

The great thing about my job is…

My role can be so dynamic and no day is ever the same. Being part of a wonderful brand, creating unique and memorable guest experiences, developing the next generation of hoteliers and selling the beautiful destination of Sydney are just a few aspects that make this industry so intoxicating.

The challenge for industry is…
The biggest challenge for the industry is being able to continually evolve the customer experience. Luxury is an individual perception, and those brands able to create emotional connections with customers are those that will prosper. There are many lovely hotel products in Sydney, but intuitive service is still the key, finding a balance between friendly, but not familiar. We call it the Art of the Stay.

My greatest achievement is…
I have managed to find a work life balance that allows me to switch off after a 12 hour day. Remaining fresh and sharp of mind is important to be able to function under pressure and make clear and concise decisions.

The biggest thing in MICE this year will be…
From a Conference and Conventions perspective I think all of Sydney is excited about the opening of ICC this year and the renewed interest it will create in Sydney as a destination for international meetings. Also, Inbound Incentive programs are also becoming more bespoke and “money can’t buy” experiences are testing the creative side of hotels and DMC’s.

I try to relax by…
I am very lucky and live close to the beach. Surfing, swimming and any activity involving water is very therapeutic. I’m also pretty good in the kitchen – or so my partner Natalie says!

I don’t understand why…
People have stopped writing letters – it is still one of my favourite things to do.

My favourite venue is…
the International Airport! Seems odd, but it’s a melting pot of tourism and excitement – I love watching people in this environment.

I’ve always wanted to travel to…
Alaska. I love wildlife and would love to see one of our last frontiers.

I am scared to death of…
Flying, believe it or not! However it is something I have had to deal with over a number of years.

I can’t live without…
My BBQ and sunscreen!

I really wish I had…
A holiday house in Fiji

If I could invite four people to a dinner party, they’d be…
Tough question as always, but right now I’d go with Kelly Slater, my 6 year old daughter, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

For anyone starting out in the industry one piece of advice I’d give would be ….

I actually have two that I live by:

  1. I was given two ears and one mouth, use them in that order.
  2. Systems and processes are managed, but people are developed.
